Hello!  Welcome to the Maine Affiliate Web Page

WHO ARE WE?  We currently have six members in our affiliate group and are always looking for more people. Please wont you give me a call and ask me how you can help.

WHEN AND WHERE DO WE MEET?  Our group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm at the Dana Center, Maine Medical Center, classroom 6,Portland, Maine call Raima Fernald @ (207) 283-4945 if you are interested in joining the affiliate or email RaimaJean@yahoo.com. Together we can do great things for people who can't.

WHAT DO WE DO?  We have held three successful Walk a Thons in Portland and also a Hoop a Thon.  Part of money raised funded a Huntington's disease education day at the Barron Center in Portland. Also our May Luncheon held in Augusta in May 2007 was a great success and it brought many families together and gave them more insight as to what the affiliate does and new friendships began.   Our affiliate began just a little over four years ago.  We are always working on advocacy and our group needs to grow if we are to maintain a strong level of awareness in Maine.  Most of us work and/or care for children and  family member's with HD so it is challenging but important to find time to plan events to raise funds and awareness and to educate state officials about our needs.  We know that the more help we have, the easier it is for all of us and the quicker we meet our goals. We all  may be at a different place in time with HD, facing different issues, but we all share the same long term goals. Please come to our meetings and find out what we are planning.  I am sure everyone can bring some ideas to help us grow.

OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS:  Recently we were involved in getting a bill passed through the Maine legislature (LD339) and it brought my son back to Maine.  There are many people still that need to be brought back to Maine that fall under this bill.  These people may not only have HD but there are other issues that they have that warrented them to be placed out of state under the old system.  This bill will also save the Maine tax payers a lot of money. Governor Baldacci proclaims May 2009 Huntington's Awareness Month.

MAINE SUPPORT GROUP:  Currently meeting at Maine Medical Center's Dana Center-Classroom #1, 22 Bramhall Street, Portland, Maine, 04102.  The 1st Wednesday of each month from 6:00-7:30 pm.  All interested persons should contact Cynthia Tack @ (207) 662-4514.
